Regarding the Current legislation in Indiana and Arkansas attempting to impose seemingly church based regulations on the treatment of sexual minorities:Regarding the drafting of any laws which might pertain to religion, Thomas Jefferson once wrote: "The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg. ..."
The recent attempts by the state legislatures of Indiana and Arkansas to elevate religious beliefs to the point where one might now legally cause injury to another (denying services) in the name of religion, seems to us to be quite contrary to the principle of separation of Church and State. We find these attempts to impose the religious beliefs of some upon unwilling others as abhorrent and quite contrary to the founding principles of this nation. To legalize the right of one to impose his or her purely religious beliefs upon others, and to cause commercial injury to others under the name of religion, is not the proper business of the state.
